With the growing demand for online grocery shopping, getting groceries delivered has become a routine part of our lives. Many consumers use Walmart and InstaCart to buy groceries online and deliver them to their homes.
Walmart has launched a new subscription program called “Walmart Plus”, an upgrade to its “Delivery Unlimited” service with additional benefits such as fuel discounts and faster in-store checkouts using Scan & Go. Is. Walmart Plus members receive free unlimited delivery of thousands of items, including groceries.
But which is better for grocery delivery, Walmart or InstaCart, and which one should you choose?
If getting a low price on groceries is your priority, you should choose Walmart on Instacart. If flexibility is more important, and you don’t want to be limited to Walmart, you should choose Instacart. Instacart delivers from hundreds of different grocery stores and has extensive coverage throughout the United States.
In this article, we will compare Walmart and InstaCart grocery delivery in terms of membership costs, availability, pricing, and quality of service.
Walmart vs. Instacart: Comparison
You can order groceries from both Walmart and Instagram using the website or by downloading the app. Both apps are available on iOS and Android devices. Creating an account by entering your email and delivery address is very straightforward.
Both Walmart and Instacart offer membership programs with free unlimited delivery for orders over $ 35. Walmart’s membership program is “Walmart Plus” and InstaCart membership is called “InstaCart Express”.
Walmart offers a 15-day free trial on Walmart Plus, while Instacart offers a 14-day free trial on Instacart Express. Walmart Plus free unlimited delivery is not available everywhere, however, so you must first verify if the service is offered at your location.
Unlike Instacart, Walmart offers Walmart + members a quick checkout in-store with additional benefits such as fuel discount and Scan & Go. Walmart Plus members get up to 5 cents per gallon of fuel discount from more than 2000 Walmart, Murphy USA, and Murphy Express gas stations.
Scan & Go allows Walmart Plus members to use their phones in stores to scan items and use self-checkout to complete purchases. This is useful when you do not have time for delivery and you need to rush to the store to pick up some items.
I’ve covered the benefits of Walmart Plus in more detail in a separate article, so check it out if you’re interested in learning more.
Walmart vs. Instacart: What Are the Membership Costs?
The Walmart Plus subscription costs $ 98 per year or $ 12.95 per month, while the Instacart Express costs $ 99 per year or $ 9.99 per month. With both membership programs, customers get free unlimited delivery for grocery orders over $ 35.
Annual subscription costs are almost the same, but keep in mind that Walmart Plus members get up to 5 cents per gallon of fuel discount at participating gas stations. So, depending on how much gas you buy, Walmart Plus subscription costs can be significantly lower than Instacart Express.
I would like to point out that Instacart allows integration with some store loyalty cards so that you can continue to reap the benefits of the store for Instacart purchases.
For example, if you have a fuel discount through a grocery store, if you link your store’s loyalty card to Instacart, you can earn reward points for purchases of Instacart. I wrote an article about how to link store loyalty cards to Instacart – you should check it out if you are interested in learning more about it.
If you do not have a Walmart Plus or Instacart Express subscription, or your order is less than 35, you must pay the delivery fee for each order. Walmart’s delivery fees vary, but you should expect to pay between $ 7.95 and $ 9.95 per order. If you order groceries from Walmart at least twice a month, you’ll save money by signing up for a Walmart Plus subscription.
The standard Instacart delivery fee is $ 3.99, but you pay an additional 5% service fee (minimum $ 2) overall. There are additional charges if you place an order during peak hours. You should expect to pay a service fee in addition to the delivery fee of $ 3.99 and $ 7.99 for each order without a subscription.
Walmart vs. Instacart: Which Has Better Availability?
Instacart is the clear winner when it comes to availability. Instacart has partnered with more than 300 national and local grocery chains to serve more than 85% of households in 50 states. Albertsons, Publix, Kroger, Aldi, Wegmans, and Costco are some of the stores that Instacart offers.
Delivery of Walmart groceries is limited to select Walmart stores, so Walmart cannot offer the flexibility that InstaCart offers through partnerships with several major grocery chains.
Walmart vs. Instacart: Which Has Lower Prices?
Walmart’s core strategy is to provide consumers with an everyday low price on all items, so Walmart is the winner when it comes to price and better deals.
It is difficult for Instacart to match Walmart’s low prices because of the cost associated with personal shopping services. Think of Instacart as a marketplace, and all grocery stores set their own prices in this marketplace.
Instacart does not charge customers for items but instead charges grocery stores for its “personal purchase” service. Some grocery stores absorb this fee and continue to respect in-store prices on Instacart, while most stores charge more than their in-store prices to cover Instacart’s service fee.
Although Instacart prices are higher than Walmart’s prices, there are ways to save money on Instacart. I wrote a separate article about it, so if you are interested in learning how to save money on Instacart, you should check out that article.
Walmart vs. Instacart: Which Has Better Service?
Both Walmart and Instacart offer one-day deliveries for groceries, and if you have a subscription, the delivery is free and unlimited for orders over $ 35.
I order from Instacart regularly, and I’m very happy with the service. There have been times when an item in the order was missing, and Instacart Customer Service credited my account for the next purchase after reporting the issue.
Both Walmart and Instacart apps are easy to navigate, and checkout is straightforward. If the item you ordered is out of stock, you can choose alternatives. If an alternative is available, Walmart offers something similar or better at a lower price.
A curbside pickup is also an option for both Walmart and InstaCart. Walmart offers free curbside pickups for grocery orders over $ 30. This is a great option if you don’t have a Walmart Plus subscription and you don’t want to pay the delivery fee.
Overall, both Walmart and Instacart offer a great delivery experience with good customer support and easy-to-use apps that allow you to order groceries on the go.
In this article, we compare Walmart and Instacart in terms of price, availability, pricing, and quality of service to determine which is best for grocery delivery.
We mentioned that the annual subscription costs for Walmart Plus and Instacart Express are almost the same ($ 98 vs. $ 99), and both subscriptions offer free unlimited delivery. However, a Walmart Plus subscription comes with additional benefits such as fuel discounts and faster in-store checkouts.
Walmart Plus members receive up to 5 cents per gallon of fuel discount at participating gas stations, which reduces the overall cost of Walmart Plus membership.
In terms of availability, Instacart is the clear winner. And in terms of low prices, it’s below Walmart. Both provide an excellent delivery experience, good customer support, and easy-to-use apps that make grocery shopping fun.
The decision between Walmart and Instacart comes down to your preference between availability and flexibility and price. If both options are available in your area and getting a lower price is more important than flexibility, then you should go with Walmart.
If flexibility is more important than price and you don’t want to be limited to Walmart, then you should go with Instacart. Instacart delivers from hundreds of grocery stores across the United States. You can visit the website to find out which stores they partner with in your area.
