5 Best Molasses Substitutes

I have discussed several places where you are sure to find molasses. However, if for whatever reason, you can’t get your hands on the thick, deep goodness of molasses, here are five ingredients you can use instead.

1. Brown sugar

Since brown sugar is made by mixing molasses with granulated sugar, it’s no surprise that it works well as a substitute. A general rule of thumb is to use 3/4 cup of solid brown sugar for every cup of molasses in the recipe. For a stronger flavor, use dark brown sugar.

2. Dark corn syrup

Another suitable alternative to molasses is dark corn syrup, made by mixing a specific type of molasses with regular corn syrup. This gives the recipe a rich color and sweetness that you would get from regular jaggery. You can replace it with the same amount of jaggery used in any recipe. You can find dark corn syrup in the baking aisle.

3. Maple syrup

Maple syrup is not as thick as molasses, but you can get the texture and sweetness you get from regular molasses. Keep in mind that maple syrup will not provide the signature molasses flavor, especially if the recipe calls for blackstrap molasses.

4. Honey

While caramel doesn’t have the molasses flavor, honey is a great substitute when used partially.

5. Mix granulated sugar with water

When all else fails, mix 3/4 cup granulated sugar with 1/4 cup water to replace one cup of molasses in any recipe. Consider the idea that you will have to enhance the flavor in the recipe by using different spices.

If you want darker gingerbread cookies, use bitter blackstrap molasses instead of lighter molasses with a stronger flavor. If you can’t find blackstrap molasses in a store, you can find different brands online.

As a replacement for maple syrup

Ran out of maple syrup? You can use light molasses to enjoy pancakes that taste just as delicious.

With its distinct taste, jaggery is an essential part of many baking recipes, be it sweet or savory. I hope you found this article informative and learned how to find molasses in the grocery store.
