What Is A Super Target? (Search It Here)

As Target began to expand into different locations in the 1980s, its growing popularity necessitated larger stores to serve a more significant number of customers. Thus Super Target was introduced in the 1990s.

SuperTarget is a larger version of the traditional Target, with each hypermarket averaging 175,000 square feet, compared to 135,000 square footage for a traditional store. These large stores provide a more comprehensive shopping experience by offering a wide selection of groceries, apparel, and home goods, while also including other amenities such as a bakery and deli counter.

When Were Super Target Stores Introduced?

The first SuperTarget store opened in 1995 in Omaha, Nebraska. The idea was to expand the Target Greatland format and combine it with a grocery store. It allowed fresh produce, meat, and dairy to be purchased at Target for the first time, along with other household and fashion picks.

Target Greatland was initially introduced in 1990 to enhance the shopping experience of its customers. The Greatland format was about 50% larger than your average Target store, with ATM facilities, faster checkout (due to wider checkout lanes), price scanners, a more expansive pharmacy, and a food aisle. The Greatland concept then became the basis for the SuperTarget store format for a one-stop-shop experience. Super Target stores offered everything from Target Greatland with the addition of fresh produce.

In recent times, all these facilities have been introduced with the rollout of the fresh format at regular Target stores to provide universal shopping convenience. Although, until then, fresh produce was only available at Super Target stores along with general merchandise.

Which States Have Super Target Stores?

Target is no stranger to the retail market. After opening its first store in 1962, the retail giant has grown tenfold since then. By 2022, Target has more than 1,900 stores in all 50 US states. However, Super Target stores make up only 13% of Target locations nationwide.

There are a total of 239 SuperTarget stores in the United States, spread across various states.

Many states that feature a SuperTarget store also have a traditional Target. US states where you can find hypermarket Target Format include Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas, Minnesota, Mississippi, Virginia, North Carolina, Illinois, Kansas, Colorado, and Indiana.

Keep in mind that different SuperTarget stores may include products that are not available at traditional stores. (More on this below).

Target vs. Supertarget: What’s the Difference?

The most noticeable difference between a standard Target store and its super version is size. On average, Target stores are 135,000 square feet, while SuperTarget counterparts are about 175,000 square feet. However, a few other differences help separate the two big box store formats.

We know that the need for a larger Target store, offering more amenities and providing a complete shopping experience to regular Target customers, arose. The retailer also hopes to attract new shoppers with the one-stop-shop plan. Thus, apart from the size, the type of merchandise also varies.

Super Target stores carry more fresh produce and wider versions of general merchandise than regular Target stores. Despite the addition of the fresh grocery concept to several traditional Target locations, the stores serving fresh produce are only 1,500 square feet in size. Thus, even with fresh food and other large grocery items, standard Target stores occupy much less space than super formats.

Therefore, SuperTarget stores, in comparison, offer much larger, fresher food and other amenities, such as a better selection of meat than the average store.

In the beginning, you only got Starbucks Coffee at Super Target locations. However, a 2002 agreement extended the service to various existing and new general merchandise stores to accommodate space. Like Starbucks, many services that were once exclusive to Super Target are now available in general merchandise stores across the United States.
However, if a super-Target store does not have special merchandise or services, they usually have a more extensive selection of products – even if the same items are available at a regular Target store.

Where is the largest Super Target store?

As we said, the size of a SuperTarget store is its primary identifier. However, not all super versions are the same size. While the average square footage of a SuperTarget store is about 175,000 square feet, the largest location of this particular store model is even larger.

The largest SuperTarget store in Alabama is 191,000 square feet, much larger than your average SuperTarget size. However, there is an even larger Target store in Maryland, approximately 204,00 square feet. Despite its size, it is designed as just “Target” with the famous bull’s eye logo.

How does SuperTarget compare to smaller format Target stores?

While SuperTarget stores occupy larger spaces and offer a wider variety and assortment of amenities, at the other end of the spectrum are the retailer’s smaller format stores. Formerly known as City Target and (even smaller) Target Express stores offer the same services as traditional stores but occupy a fraction of the space.
Small format stores are typically between 12,000 and 80,000 square feet, compared to about 135,000 and 175,000 square feet for a standard Target and Super Target store.

The idea of small format stores is to establish a customer base in urban areas, where space is an issue for traditional or superstores. Although they offer many of the same items as their larger counterparts, smaller Target stores have a limited selection. For example, the target pharmacy section in an urban area is usually half the size of a more traditional store.

Simply put, small-format stores offer similar products and services (hello, same-day delivery!) to the larger ones, just with much less variety.

Super Target Rebranding: Things to Know

There are Target stores where you can still see “Super” next to the retailer’s name. However, in 2015, retail companies addressed the rebranding of their small format stores by announcing that all large and small Target locations, regardless of size, would be rebranded simply as “Target”.
However, the rebranding does not see the corporation moving away from its various store formats to better serve the needs of consumers. Although Target will still include large and small stores in multiple locations, they will simply be called “Target.” Thus, the concept of SuperTarget stores and their smaller versions will remain the same, but their differentiation based on their mark will be eliminated.

Therefore, Target will not build any new SuperTarget stores that are branded as such, regardless of their size.

The bottom line

A super Target store is a more expanded version of a traditional Target store, typically offering a greater variety of merchandise and fresher produce. Although with the rollout of the fresh concept, SuperTarget stores no longer exclusively sell fresh groceries, they still have more products in stock and a greater selection thanks to their larger sizes. However, in 2015, Target announced that all of its stores would now simply be called “Target, regardless of size”. As such, retailers will no longer build a store with SuperTarget branding, even if it is larger than the average 135,000 square foot space of a typical store.
