When we think of Speedway Stores, we automatically think of topping up our gas tanks. But Speedway stores offer more than just gas.
So, does Speedway take EBT? Yes, they do. You may want to read this article first though as there are some rules to follow when using it.

Speedway is an American convenience store and gas station chain headquartered in Ennon, Ohio, with locations primarily in the Midwest and East Coast regions of the United States wholly owned by 7-Eleven.

Using EBT At Speedway

Padway stores only accept payment via EBT for SNAP-eligible items. Therefore, you cannot buy gas or any other products that are not eligible for EBT.

So what items are eligible for SNAP? Let’s take a look.

SNAP-eligible items

  • Fruit
  • Vegetables
  • Bread and Cereals
  • Meat
  • Poultry
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yogurt)
  • Fish
  • Soft Drinks
  • Energy Drinks
  • Snacks
  • Desserts

It’s unlikely you’ll be doing your weekly grocery shop at Speedway, but it helps to know you can use your EBT card if you need something while you’re out and about.

Prohibited Items

Items you cannot purchase using your EBT card include:

  • Tobacco products
  • Alcohol
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Pet food/supplies
  • Household items
  • Any other non-food items

Why Can’t I Buy Gas With EBT?

Gas is not covered by the SNAP program as it is not beneficial to the health or lifestyle of an individual.

The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) was introduced to provide families on low incomes with access to healthy and nutritious foods and drinks. Therefore, it is clear to see why gas is prohibited as it is not considered an essential item/product.

The same can be said for all convenience stores that are also gas stations. So if you need to fill up with gas and buy some bread and milk, you will need an alternative payment method to cover the cost of the gas.

How To Use Your EBT Card At Speedway

Using your EBT card at Speedway couldn’t be easier. The process is the same as any other grocery store. Here is a short guide to help you out.

Step #1: Scan Your Items

First, the cashier needs to scan each of your items. You may also want to let them know that you plan to pay in advance using EBT.

Step #2: Insert Your EBT Card

After scanning your items, the cashier will ask you to insert your EBT card into the reader. At this point, you will need to enter your EBT four-digit PIN number. You will get your PIN number on activation of the card.

If you have forgotten your PIN number, you will need to find another payment method. To get a new PIN number, you must contact EBT Customer Service.

Step #3:Take Your Items

After the transaction is authorized, you can retrieve your items. If your items are a mix of EBT-eligible and non-eligible items, you will need an alternative payment method for the non-eligible items.

Can You Purchase Hot Food With EBT?

Unfortunately, EBT prohibits the purchase of hot food and hot drinks that are prepared at the point of purchase. If you live in an area registered under the Restaurant Meal Program (RMP), it allows individuals to purchase food from restaurants using EBT.
However, it is only available to certain individuals who may be homeless, elderly, or disabled.

Do All Speedway Stores Accept EBT?

Yes, if there is a Speedway store in your location, it will accept payment by EBT card. However, if you’re not sure, don’t hesitate to contact your local Speedway to find out.

Speedway Payment Options

Below are all of the different ways you can pay for items at Speedway including:

  • Cash
  • Debit
  • Credit
  • Apple Pay
  • Google Pay

Can I Use My EBT Card If It Is Damaged?

Fortunately, a damaged EBT card can still be used. In such a case, the cashier will be able to manually enter your card details into their system. However, you will still need to enter your PIN number into the reader.

What Should I Do About A Lost Or Stolen EBT Card?

If your EBT card is lost, or if it is stolen, you should contact your local EBT customer service hotline to order a replacement. The customer service assistant will then cancel your card so that no one else can use it. However, you may have to wait 3-5 working days for the new one to arrive. You will then need to activate the card before you can use it.

Conclusion

So there you have it. Speedway accepts valid EBT as a valid method of payment for SNAP-eligible items. That means, unfortunately, you can’t buy gas with your EBT card. For more information about using your EBT card at Speedway, or at a store for that matter, contact your local EBT customer service.
